Voluntourism: Life Changing Travel That Makes A Difference

For those that long to be more than a tourist, we're pleased to offer a series of vountourism travel programs around the globe where travelers can combine adventure travel and make a positive difference in a local community overseas, if not on the planet, on important volunteer trips that range from mostly one or two weeks in length.

Imagine spotting a herd of wild Elephants in South Africa before teaching some English lessons to local children… or hurtling through the Costa Rican jungle on a zip wire after helping save endangered leatherback turtles. Your adventure starts here.

The concept of voluntourism is to work on a social, environmental or community project abroad that will help make a positive impact and provide an incredible life experience to all involved, while also enjoying travel in the destination.

Is voluntourism for you?
These programs are ideal for people passionate about making a difference in a community or to the planet; who yearn to exercise their social responsibility and promote sustainability; and who are open to experiencing different cultures.

Types of programs range from those that mostly involve volunteering, to those that balance "work" with adventure, or offer just a taste of volunteering.

These "voluntourism" programs are great options for individuals, families and small groups and are available around the world.

What kind of projects are available?
Trips are generally categorized as conservation trips, meaningful tours, community work or adventure trips. Opportunities abound, and you might work in orphanages, childcare centers, schools, and other community organizations, on building projects or with wildlife. Sample projects include:

  • teaching English or helping out at an orphanage in Kenya
  • working at a monkey sanctuary in Kruger Park
  • coaching sports activities in Rio
  • working with orangutans in Malaysia
  • working with lions and other large cats in South Africa
  • wildlife projects in the Galapagos or India

What type of accomodations and meals are offered?
There are different types of housing, depending on the project and location. Volunteers may live in private homes with a family, in hostels with single rooms or in dormitory-style housing or luxury tented camp. Meals are based on local cuisine.

What is the cost?
Prices vary by program, but on average range between $500-$1,000 per week, not including roundtrip airfare to the destination, and includes housing, meals, meet-and-greet at the airport upon arrival and transfers.

After a week or two as a voluntourist, a wide variety of excursions are available to see more of the country.

How is the program managed?
A help desk is available for pre-departure information, to provide briefing materials and inoculation and visa advice. Upon arrival a full orientation takes place on local geography, culture and expectations. Local English-speaking project coordinators are on site. Also 24/7 emergency support access is provided should it be needed.
